Mkhaya Game Reserve - Black and White Rhinos
Mick Reilly is the owner of three game reserves in Mlilawne, Hlane and Mkhaya.
It is in the latter that the ecovolunteers stay because it is dedicated to the protection of white and black rhinos, who are endangered because of poaching.
Mkhaya plays an important role in Southern African conservation efforts as the rangers have been involved in the reintroduction of over 20 locally extinct species. Mkhaya Game Reserve is one of the few places in the world where you can see black and white rhinos living together.
hippopotamus, crocodile and over twenty big game species and large predators, like leopard and hyena, are all found in Mkhaya Game Reserve. Mkhaya is also an important location for the national and sub-regional conservation of raptors, with a number of vulture and eagle nests.
Swaziland can be divided into four climatic and geographic regions, which gives to this landlocked country, outstanding flora and fauna.
We were ecovolunteers in Mkhaya Game Reserve in August 2008.
Our main activities were :
- Monitoring of endangered species ;
- Game capture and relocation in others reserves ;
- Poaching controls ;
- Help the veterinarians in case of interventions

Our participation in the capture of sixty zebras remains one of the highlights of our trip.
This trip transformed us and convinced us on the merits of ecovolunteer trips.
